Hummingbird Speech Services provides speech and language therapy in McAllen, Texas, and surrounding areas. We focus on offering skilled, evidence based practices with grace, compassion, and respect.
Evaluations
At Hummingbird Speech Services, evaluations are thorough and holistic. We use:
Formal assessments, which may include standardized tests

Parent/caregiver and client interviews
This approach allows us to see the whole picture and capture strengths and areas of concern within a client’s everyday life activities.
Our Approach to Therapy
Therapy sessions are varied depending on the client’s needs. Sessions may take place at a client’s home, online, or public space. Our sessions are:

Individualized Therapy Services

Speech therapy is focused on speech sounds and is known as articulation
This may directly influence how you or others understand the client.
Treatment involves teaching or correcting a speech sound.

Receptive language therapy involves how a person understands language.
Expressive language therapy focuses on using language to make one’s needs and wants met.
We teach language concepts and usage via play based and child led therapy activities.
For adults, we teach language concepts and usage through functional and meaningful activities

Literacy therapy involves the ability to encode and decode sounds for reading and writing as well as comprehend what is being read.
We have been trained to use the Orton Gillingham approach, which is an evidenced based, multi sensory program for struggling readers.

Pragmatic therapy is focused on social skills
Therapy is based on an inclusive and neurodiverse approach.

Executive functioning therapy focuses on filling in the missing “holes” in the overall picture
We may target attention skills, planning and executing a task, memory skills and problem solving.

Stuttering therapy is focused on learning how the speech mechanism and brain work to physically express one’s thoughts.
We teach a client how to control stuttering instances and how to self advocate.
Other Support Services

We work directly with and teach the caregiver strategies and techniques to enhance their loved ones speech and language skills.

Carry over activities may be sent home for practice.
We encourage family involvement during therapy sessions.

Upon request, we can provide local support groups and online resources to enhance your knowledge specific for you or your loved one.

Providing educational presentations to the public.
Collaboratively working with other disciplines, such as occupational or physical therapists.
